Characters

October 28, 2010 under curios

In my previous post, I showed a video clip of a man with great courage and belief. Someone who is easy to laugh at because he doesn’t bother to protect himself from the opinions of others, because he is chasing something more important.

Here’s another.

Live from New York

October 27, 2010 under curios, tongueincheek

An interesting candidate from the New York gubernatorial debate…

He’s a serious candidate. But he has, shall we say, a unique perspective. Still, I’m inclined to think that there’s at least some truth to be found in his point of view.

Welcome to your everything

October 19, 2010 under curios

What is your everything?

God? Your true love? Your art? Your stamp collection?

It’s different for different people – I just hope mine never becomes Yahoo!

Yes, the Yahoo! login page is running a series of bothersome taglines:

“Welcome to your everything.”
“Find your inner everything.”
“Your own personal everything.”

Each capped with the phrase, “Make Yahoo! your home.”

I guess it’s not news that marketing bothers me. But I’m fascinated by the use of spiritual language. Marketers who are mercenary use things that work, that affect people. The difficulty is that when language is used outside it’s proper sense, it becomes meaningless.

Yahoo! is using language that is utterly ridiculous. Everyone agrees that if our sense of belonging and meaning was centred on Yahoo! it would be catastrophic.

But it’s interesting that they gravitate to this language.

Also, the guy in the accompanying image has the most awful tie (refresh, he’ll come up) I’ve ever seen.

Nice one here.

Read the comments. It’s interesting the power of simple asking- if you ask people to be nice, often they will be.

Visitors, please post a nice comment below. Thank you.

The internet has a koan for this

September 22, 2010 under curios, technical, tongueincheek

The internet has a koan for this. (Non-link-follower-summary: Initiative to create ‘one system to rule them all’ is a bad idea).

From the BBC Article:

The idea would enable a given app to work, for example, on a web-ready television, in a car and on a mobile, no matter the makers of the devices.

However, industry insiders say the idea is unlikely to get off the ground.

Yeah, no kidding. Ima shut up now.  Read the koan.

A fun job
