Complexity is beautiful.

So is simplicity.

What does it mean?

Complexity is like trash.

You have to manage it. It has to be the right stuff.

If you manage it wrong you have discord.

If you have more of it to manage wrong, you’ve just got more discord.

Simplicity is beautiful because it allows you to see that right stuff is right stuff.

Watch this:
It’s simple.There’s nothing there. The line is right.

It’s got a high right stuff percentage. It’s pure. There’s no pollution.

Look at this picture.

It’s complex. Count the lines. None of them are straight.

It’s got a high right stuff percentage. It’s pure. There’s no pollution.

Even though there’s so much of it. It’s mastery.

Complexity isn’t the enemy, having the wrong stuff is the enemy.

Complexity just makes the wrong stuff easier.

Some stuff is complex; old guys have wrinkly faces.

If you ignore that fact, you get the wrong stuff.

Sometimes the right stuff is complex.

One Response to Complexity is beautiful.

  1. Amba Sewa says:

    Indeed- you could have the tide come in to point A and depart to point B twice a day. Simple. Not that what is can’t be mapped with scientific accuracy but in the complexity is beauty.

    Glory be to God for dappled things-
    For skies of couple-colour as a brindled cow:
    For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
    Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches wings;
    Landscape plotted and pieced-fold, fallow, and plough:
    And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.

    All things counter, original, spare, strange;
    Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
    With swift, slow: sweet sour; adazzle, dim;
    He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
    Praise him.
    .–.Gerard Manley Hopkins, Pied Beauty
