I find the internet has somewhat of an opposite effect on me. The biggest fish in the world are right next to me, in the internet world. It can be exhilarating, but also intimidating, a reminder of my smallness.

On a semi-related note, Seth Godin kicks around an interesting idea that the way to excel and push through mediocrity (he calls it the dip) is to become the best in the world at something very small, and then to grow that thing.

For every person, I'm sure there exists a thing such that they are the best in the world at it. It's a nifty thought, to be sure.

My personal definition of the internet is a place where anyone can find a pond so small that they can be they biggest fish. Everyone wants a place where they can feel important and break all the rules, and thanks to the internet there is now a place like that for everyone. Somewhere.
