What’s the beef?

Written on December 13, 2008

My brother seems to be underwhelmed by the 7lb tub of naval salt beef I bought at the supermarket.

I can’t understand it. Not only is it a hefty tub of beef, but it’s both coastal and vintage.

He put it in the fridge. I’m pretty sure you don’t need to do that ;-)

    Yeah, it’s ah… pretty salty.

I’ve just learned that you’re supposed to boil it beforehand to draw the salt out.
Me? I just added more vinegar and cabbage. To be fair, it drew the salt out all right – at least judging by the state of the cabbage.

Word to the wise – don’t attempt to flavour salt beef with soy sauce.

that’s wonderful – actually it makes sense that you have to boil it – that way the salt preserves it til it’s eaten. Cabbage and naval salt beef – that’s a historic meal. I’m amazed they sell salt beef at superstore.
